About the Compact Course
The worldwide Compact Course with its hands-on approach includes 14 mind maps and weekly live support. The 21 pages long step-by-step guide/log will keep you on the right track and the discussion group is there for learning together.
Through the Compact Course you can learn the art of subtitling in a very special way: you don't learn the course, you practice it - avoiding to pick up wrong subtitling habits that would have to be unlearned again.
This is the essence of the compact-concept: going through the many contradictory subtitling rules quickly so that they go into your short-term memory. Then, while practicing, they will go into your long-term memory.
With the fourteen mind maps, you are able to scan the rules of subtitling just before starting to practice, and memorising will be even easier.
As you acquire experience, your brain will gradually take over the complex deciding process of weighing the rules against each other and opting for the best possible solution - a process as natural and almost automatic as speaking.
This audiovisual translation course focuses not only on on condensing (also called truncating, translating very concisely), the essence of subtitling, attention is also paid to voice-over translations and subtitling for the hearing-impaired.
The Compact Course was developed in The Netherlands, where most films and tv-programmes are subtitled.
The course proved to be such a success that we decided to make an international version.
