Portugal's singularity
It still happens in Portugal. Somewhere in 2000, on television, a euphoric program for the young, brimming with childish optimism. Between times: one of the greatest singers of the country: Dulce Pontes.Of course, she has to promote her new cd 'O primeiro canto'. But she doesn't opt for an 'easy', appealing song, she sings the solemn, mystic ‘Porto de mágoas’ (Port of sorrows).
The faces remain cheerful in spite of all this seriousness of tones and lyrics, which they hear without really comprehending. They don't know what they hear.
During the silence before the last part they start applauding enthusiastically. They're shocked and cease when the singer continues.
In some respects Portugal is a rich country, where passionate artists like Dulce Pontes still pass on to youngsters the very best they have to offer.
